For more than a decade, @urban_gorillas has been organizing the @pame_kaimakli urban festival in the Kaimakli neighborhood of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.
For this edition, they decided to focus on a section of an old, abandoned railroad track, on Cooperation street. Along with many artists and performers, they invited us to take over this line. We, Maxence Bohn from Collectif Etc, Léo Hudson and Studio Baïnem, proposed building a small train consisting of three modules: each one consists of a platform mounted on eight wheels, with a custom module installed on top. We thus created a locomotive-shaped bar car (a tribute to the historic “Regis” ice cream factory located at the end of the line), a theater car for micro-events, and a chill car for relaxation.
These modules have been designed and built to serve as a prototype for several months, exploring possible future uses and transformations of this pathway. Discussions with the local authorities and inhabitants should lead to the emergence of a longer-term project.
The week concluded with a two-night program during which the entire half-kilometer-long line came alive with a varied lineup, ranging from clown shows to food trucks, as well as stands in support of Palestine, concerts and DJ sets, or temporary installations by students from the Department of Architecture of the University of Nicosia.
Thank you for having us, it was great!
