Penc’ Mobile
This is part of a larger project called « Pépinière Urbaine Dakar », supported by AFD and lead by Gret.
For almost one year, we are based in Dakar, Senegal, to work on innovative public spaces linked to the two main transportation projects going on in this african capital : TER and BRT.
First step to meet the communities were to build a mobile system to create new spaces of talking. The name refers to a wolof tradition, a « penc' », which is the moment as much as the location of public community talk to discuss about their concerns.
This design refers to the local « dibiterie » or « café touba », typical small mobile systems of informal economy, crossed in the streets all over the city.
We worked with local craftmen, using both new and second hand materials, and the design as been oriented to be the more flexible as possible, and defined with the « media team » as a support to organise public broadcasting. After a few used, it has been painted by a local artist, Moussa Diallo, specialized in « cars rapides ».
